Tin whistles are made of
brass! Some are nickel coated but brass underneath. All the
recordings have been made using a "D" whistle so always use a
"D" whistle yourself. The "D" whistle allows you to
play in the keys of D and G, which are the most common keys in which Irish
music is played. It is always worthwhile finding a good instrument from
the start. There are many whistles available but I fully recommend the
DXTRAD brass whistle by Tony Dixon. This is the same whistle with which
all the recordings on this site have been made and if you can't find one
locally you can easily order one through this site, details enclosed whenever
you order any Playpack. These whistles also have the advantage that they
can easily be "tuned" by adjusting the head. That way you can
always be in tune with the recordings and with other players.
Learning the whistle should always be something you enjoy and if there are any
moments when it may seem a little difficult, remember you are learning a
totally new skill that when learned properly will stay with you forever.
So look on it as a long term adventure and take it in small stages. Rome
wasn't built ... etc.
For all you green enthusiasts, playing the whistle requires no power other
than your own breath! So the hours of pleasure you enjoy playing your
whistle will not even be adding to your carbon footprint.
